Background & Musical Journey
Can you share the story behind your artist name, HANLEY?
A: There is no special meaning behind my artist name besides it being my surname. I changed it from my original moniker “GDup” in 2008, about 4 years before I took a 12 year hiatus from creating music.
How did your musical journey begin, and what inspired you to pursue music?
A: I began listening to Hip Hop at a very young age, and began writing music at around the age of 11 or 12. OutKast was a main influence in my decision to pursue music. I had found the intricate nature in the way Andre 3000 could write but also make it more than just a rap song appealing. My music took a long time to get a sound I was comfortable with, and I also feel as if it was more than just putting rhymes together. I had always aimed to be more than just a rapper; I aspired to be more of a songwriter as opposed to your typical rap artist. As I grew musically, I began finding my sound was much more drawn to writing more conscious type songs about life and struggles, which led me to become a big fan of Joe Budden and his earlier catalog, like his Mood Muzik series.
Were there any pivotal moments or influences that shaped your musical style?
A: I think the most pivotal moment in my career was mt 12 year hiatus which began in 2012 and came to an end in March of 2024 when I decided to get back into creating music where I found my songwriting, imagination and styles all came to a more unique form of artistry that I would have never thought I could pull out of my heart. I believe the hiatus gave me time to consider what I would aim to do this second time around, creating music. Since returning, I feel the music I’ve released has really been therapeutic not just for me making it, but for people who have been listening to it. It’s also shown me I have a stronger passion for it now than I did before I took my hiatus back in 2012.
Creative Process & Inspirations: How would you describe your musical style or genre?
A: I would describe my musical style as adaptive, raw, transparent, filled with metaphors and messages that many can relate to. As a songwriter I would still consider myself a Hip Hop artist, but with the heart to alternate genres when needed.
What is your typical process for creating new music?
A: My typical process for creating new music has a lot to do with the production. If the production isn’t unique, then my music will not bring out any unique qualities out of my songwriting. I try to work with as many different producers as possible with a unique sound to bring my music to life.
Are there any artists or genres that have significantly influenced your work?
A: OutKast, Joe Budden, Ransom, City & Colour, Shad, Choclair, Mobb Deep, Alchemist, Griselda, The Diplomats/Dipset, DMX.
Releases & Projects: Could you tell us about your latest release? What was the inspiration behind it?
A: Hanley x CR8S | SIDEWAYS EIGHT was released on 04/20/2025. CR8S produced the entire project. Start to finish, including the mixing and mastering of the full album. The album is a collaborative project, which officially marks my first full original project since returning. The inspiration behind this release was the idea of music being timeless, which is why we titled it Sideways Eight, which is the symbol for infinity. We wanted the songs on this album to be timeless, which falls into being infinite.
Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?
A: Following the release of the Hanley x CR8S Sideways Eight collaborative album, I’ve began work on a second collaborative album with Calvin KRhyme, another local producer from where I’m located in Ottawa. The yet-to-be-named project is slated for a summer release. Some collaborations with artists I’m looking forward to my upcoming collaborations with Wordsworth and Choclair.

A: The song RAW EMOTION was made to help others relate to similar feelings that I’ve felt in the past and still do in this moment. The feeling of being alone when you are desperately in need of support. The raw Emotions we feel as humans. How sometimes the emotions we feel can make us fall into bad or dangerous habits like substance abuse, mental health issues and much more.
